The European Green Toad is the most acutely threatened of all Sweden’s amphibian species. On Öland’s southern tip a special programme is underway to improve its prospects, for example by maintaining the wetlands in the area.
Along with all native amphibians and reptiles, the green toad is protected in Swedish law. The Swedish population remains precariously small and there is a risk that the species would be lost from the Swedish fauna without ongoing efforts to raise tadpoles and introduce them into suitable environments.
